The Nullarbor

The Nullarbor- Old Eyre Highway. In November myself and my family set off on the 50+ hour drive from the Gold Coast to Perth to live. Part of that journey- and the biggest day of driving was crossing the Nullarbor. We had heard some horror stories! 'Take gallons of water and fuel' 'buy a radio to keep in touch with the outside world because you'll have 0 phone coverage'. While this is mostly true... there were some stops along the way which really helped. We stayed at the Border Village Roadhouse before we set off on our 10 hour drive. We stocked up on water and fuel. 4.5 hours into our drive we took a rest stop at one of the stop off points. (There were only 2 on the stretch). We refilled with fuel, used the toilets and grabbed some fresh sandwiches to enjoy for the remainder of the trip. Now the Nullarbor is sometimes called 'The Nullar- boring' which we totally understand now. There is nothing to see. We saw 0 wildlife, 0 houses, 0 anything. Every now and then we would see a car passing and gave them the 'Nullarbor wave' but it was a very very long boring drive to say the least. But we are glad we got to experience it for sure. The outback really is a thing and you really do feel a world away from civilisation. Especially when there is 0 phone and 4g coverage and the games of eye spy become boring after 'S for sky and S for sand' is used countless times. Download your playlists and set your GPS up before you head off on the drive. (It may only be 1 straight road but it's good to see the time go down).
